Mjølfjell Y.H. was the first purpose-built Y.H. in Norway. Erected in 1939, most construction work was done for free by ethusiasts form many parts of the world. A prerequisite for running the Y.H. was the supply of electrisity. In 1946 a hydroelectric power station was put to use by diverting parts of the Raun valley river through a wooden pipeline.
It is still running, and up until the mid sixties the plant supplied the whole Mjølfjell area. Inside the plant there is virtually a live museum, showing in a few square-meters the production of electrisity. Some of the major parts, like the hydro turbine, dates back to 1914 while other parts of the equipment have been gradually modernized. |

Mjølfjell is a ideal starting point for daytrips in the western mountain area. You can go downhill to Voss by car or train (40 minutes). Here you can visit various workshops and museums, and during the winter one of Norway´s major alpine resorts with the Hanguren and Bavallen slopes. At Voss you have a range of tour alternatives.
If you choose to go uphill you can catch the train at our "own" station Ørneberget. In 10 minutes it will take you to Myrdal. Myrdal is the starting point for one of the most popular tourist-attractions in Norway. You can go by foot, bike or by train down the breathtaking Flåmsdalen. Depending on your time available you can walk or bike all the way to Flåm or catch the Flåm line half-way at Berekvam back to Myrdal and Ørneberget. |
